Abstract:

The essay examines the three major prophecies in Piers Plowman and argues that the prophecy-riddles are not satiric, but correspond to larger themes within the work as a whole, and may even be regarded, since they are spoken by Conscience, by the author, and by Patience, as a distillation of the poem's essential message: they demand that we consider eschatology, the true nature of our present world, and our own salvation.
